Dr. Bei Liu, Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) , Chinese name 刘凤仪

Licensed Acupuncturist in California

Founder of Acupuncture Valley Health Center

Dr. Liu is a 14th-generation inheritor of a long-standing family tradition in Chinese medicine, having inherited the wisdom and refined medical techniques of distinguished acupuncturists before her. She specializes in treating complex conditions—particularly severe lower back pain, sciatica, cervical spine disorders, and gynecological diseases—with excellent results.

With over 20 years of clinical experience in TCM, Dr. Liu previously worked as a practicing physician and attending doctor at major hospitals in Beijing, China. She is currently the Academic Vice President and Professor at the University of East-West Medicine, a renowned TCM university in California, and serves as the Director of the University’s Medical Center.

Dr. Liu has inherited the gynecological expertise of Professor Zhiqiang Guo and integrated it with her family’s TCM heritage. She has developed uniquely effective herbal formulations and combines them with acupuncture to treat gynecological disorders. Each year, she helps numerous patients improve and recover from complex conditions; many have successfully conceived naturally or through in vitro fertilization (IVF) following TCM treatment.

Dr. Liu has also inherited the knowledge of Professors Weiqin Guo and Lixin Chen, combining their expertise with her family’s TCM background to treat hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Using acupuncture and expert herbal formulations, she has helped improve patients’ conditions. Her clinical experience shows strong effectiveness in enhancing the quality of life for those with chronic heart failure.

Dr. Liu has unique insights into treating hypertension—especially borderline cases—in menopausal women. She has helped many patients manage blood pressure naturally through TCM and healthy lifestyle habits, avoiding the need for long-term medication.

After immigrating to the U.S., Dr. Liu has taught Traditional Chinese Medicine in both the master’s clinical and doctoral programs in acupuncture and Oriental medicine at the University of East-West Medicine. Together with the faculty and leadership team, she has contributed to the education of hundreds of TCM master’s and doctoral graduates.

Passionate about helping others find health and harmony, Dr. Liu founded her own TCM clinic while serving in multiple roles at the university. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor activities with her family and actively supports community charities. Her preferred practices—qigong, standing meditation, Baduanjin (Eight Pieces of Brocade), and Zen meditation—help her maintain the energy to treat patients and keep a youthful body and mind. She often teaches these exercises to patients to support better health.

Dr. Bei Liu studied under renowned physicians

Professor Zhiqiang Guo

Chief Physician and Professor at Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and a mentor to master’s students. He previously served as head of the gynecology department and director of the medical department, and was selected for the third cohort of the National Inheritance Project for Senior TCM Experts. In 2009, the “Guo Zhiqiang Famous Doctor Inheritance Studio 3+3” was established in Beijing; in 2011, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine recognized the “National Famous Senior TCM Expert Guo Zhiqiang Inheritance Studio.” He received the State Council’s special government allowance.

Building upon the classical view that “Yin is often deficient and Yang often in excess,” Professor Guo proposed the modern theory that “for women, Yin is often deficient and Yang is also frequently weak.” He emphasized “nourishing the liver over simply soothing it” and developed the “Sequential Therapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine,” applying four proprietary herbal prescriptions across four distinct physiological cycles. For chronic pelvic inflammation, he advocated warming the meridians, promoting blood circulation, and unblocking the collaterals, and pioneered a herbal retention enema therapy.

Over more than 50 years of clinical work, he summarized his experience in books such as Essentials of Guo Zhiqiang’s Gynecology and Guo Zhiqiang’s Case Studies on Infertility, systematically explaining his academic ideas and treatment approaches. His reputation as the “Guanyin of Childbearing” is well-deserved, and he has mentored more than 100 students and apprentices since 1994, many of whom have become accomplished TCM practitioners.

Professor Weiqin Guo

From a TCM family lineage, Professor Guo studied under her father, Guo Shikui, a renowned cardiovascular expert. She is the former director of Dongzhimen Hospital at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and the hospital’s chief professor in cardiovascular studies. A nationally recognized senior TCM practitioner and Capital Master of TCM, she has deep expertise in coronary heart disease, hypertension, and heart failure. Building on her father’s academic philosophy—promoting blood circulation and removing stasis, with aromatic and warming techniques—she innovated formulas such as Yiqi Xiefei Tang, Jiangzhi Tongmai Fang, and Fudou Heji. These “standard prescriptions” are used in several large hospitals, helping improve atherosclerosis, prevent post-stent restenosis, slow heart-failure progression, and reverse endothelial injury from hyperlipidemia.

Professor Lixin Chen

Professor Chen holds a doctorate in the integrated treatment of cardiovascular disease with traditional Chinese and Western medicine. He is a professor, chief physician, and doctoral advisor, with a PhD in Integrated Clinical Medicine from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and an EMBA from China Europe International Business School. A leading expert in the protective effects of TCM and its active ingredients against acute ischemic heart injury, he has led major projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and other agencies, published over 20 papers, and has extensive clinical experience in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
